CROSS-EV

The CROSS_EV project aims to promote the spread of electric mobility and support sustainable transportation in the Hungarian Croatian border region. The initiative focuses on developing the electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI), particularly in rural areas where the existing charging network is sparse or non-existent.

The project contributes to regional development in several ways:

  • By encouraging the use of electric vehicles, it reduces air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • By installing charging stations near tourist destinations, it supports sustainable tourism.
  • By integrating renewable energy sources, it helps reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
  • By ensuring seamless cross-border charging, it strengthens cooperation and cohesion between border regions.

The project supports energy efficiency improvement and greenhouse gas reduction objectives. Electric mobility plays a key role in this process, as a reliable charging infrastructure is essential for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. When combined with renewable energy production, e-mobility contributes to more efficient energy management and reduced transmission losses.

CROSS_EV is implemented in Virovitica-Podravina, Baranya, and Somogy counties, areas that have so far shown slow progress in developing EVCI due to limited business interest. Over the 24-month implementation period, partners work closely to establish a unified and compatible system that ensures a smooth charging experience across borders.

While Western European countries such as Austria and Germany already have national institutions supporting e-mobility infrastructure development, Hungary and Croatia lack such structures. Therefore, project partners must create their own frameworks and methodologies to guide the process.

The main target group of the CROSS_EV project is local municipalities, which play a key role in promoting charging infrastructure development and encouraging national-level policy changes. At the same time, the project also engages local communities through public events that raise awareness about the benefits of electric mobility. As a result of the project, five new electric charging stations will be installed in rural areas, and a guideline document for municipalities will be produced to support local EVCI planning and implementation.

Through these actions, the CROSS_EV project not only promotes e-mobility but also helps improve air quality, protects the climate, and strengthens cross-border community connections.
